Special Olympics Maryland

http://www.somd.org/

Special Olympics Mission

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

Special Olympics Philosophy

Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy, and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. These must be adapted only as necessary to meet the needs of those with mental and physical limitations.

Special Olympics believe that consistent training is indispensable to the development of an individual’s sports skills. In addition, competition among those of equal abilities is the most appropriate means of testing these skills, measuring progress, and providing incentives for personal growth.

Special Olympics Maryland’s Vision

The vision of Special Olympics Maryland is to be the leader in lifelong and unified sports programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities, empowering athletes to be valued members of their community and respected members of society.

Special Olympics Maryland’s Values

The following six values guide all decisions and actions taken by staff, volunteers and athletes.

Community: We attempt to connect our athletes with their local COMMUNITY as much as possible. We use community facilities; we generate local publicity, and we portray the athletes and their families as local heroes. Connections and bridges are formed.
Friendships: We encourage FRIENDSHIPS among athletes and families throughout Special Olympics. We also encourage friendships with athletes without disabilities through their commonality of sport. The goal is friendships for life.
Integrity: Athletes develop INTEGRITY by doing the “right thing”.
Opportunity: All Special Olympics stakeholders are given the OPPORTUNITY to excel.
Quality: in all we do.
Sportsmanship: We follow the rules of the game by demonstrating good SPORTSMANSHIP and fairness for all.

Special Olympics Athlete’s Oath
“Let me win; but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Frederick Challenger Little League Baseball

http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=challengerfrederick

The Frederick Challenger Little League is an independent league established to provide an opportunity for players with physical or developmental disabilities to participate in Baseball to the maximum of their individual abilities. We work cooperatively with the Little League programs throughout Little League's Maryland District 2 region. The area leagues support us with fields and volunteer support as well as by directing interested players to us.

We have eight teams with players from an area of over 50 miles. Each team plays approximately 18 games during the season which runs from late April to the end of June.

Since 2004 we have sent a team to the Virginia Beach "Challenger Jamboree" annually. At that event they play with Challenger teams from around the world. In 2007 we hosted a tournament sponsored by the Orioles Advocates organization. Annually we play a special game with the Frederick Keys at Grove Stadium. We have also been hosted annually at Camden Yards by the Orioles Advocates to see the Orioles play.

In 2005 our season was completed by playing at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. At that event we established new records for attendance and the first Home Run in a Challenger Exhibition Game, hit by Phillip Shepard.

Our 2006 season was topped off with a trip to the White House where our new Thurmont team sponsored by the Frederick Civitan Club played T-Ball with a team from West Virginia with President and Mrs Bush on hand with Willie Mays as Commisioner.

Last year our players appeared in an edition of "Home Make Over Extreme Edition" on ABC Television.

All teams individually have sponsors from business and service organizations. Donations and Volunteers are always welcome. Your contributions are deductible as the Frederick Challenger Little League is a 501(c)(3) organization

Upper Montgomery County Maryland Challenger Little League

Hope that you are enjoying your summer and it's been full of fun and relaxation. I wanted to take this moment to let you all know that Nick and myself are in the process of filing paperwork to start a Little League Challenger for Upper Montgomery County. I know many of you have expressed that traveling to Frederick has been financially expensive and hard due to the distance.

We have spoke with the Board of Directors of Frederick Little League and would be glad to team up with them to play. Our hopes is to start in Spring of 2011 but need help. We need to have a minimum of five people on the board of directors, to help out. If you or know of anyone who is interested in getting this off the ground. Please contact Nick or myself at 301.253.3638.

For those of you that aren't familiar with Challenger Little League, it's a no-score kept league that allows children with all disabilities from ages of 4 and up the opportunity to play ball. We are wanting to play in and around the county but need parents help and input.

We would love to help others in the county and have great fun as well.

Sensory Movies sponsored by Autism Society of America

http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageServer?pagename=sensoryfilms

AMC Entertainment (AMC) and the Autism Society have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment on a monthly basis with the "Sensory Friendly Films" program.

In order to provide a more accepting and comfortable setting for this unique audience, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought up and the sound turned down, families will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing - in other words, AMC’s “Silence is Golden®” policy will not be enforced unless the safety of the audience is questioned.

Did you go to one of our previous Sensory Friendly Flims? Tell us what you thought!

Tickets are $4-6 depending on location and can be purchased on the day of the event.
